Would you like to create a place where your land and home is a source of production instead of just consumption?
Would you like to know more about the various plant and tree species that are on your property and what they indicate about your climate, soil and water sources? Would you like to know what species are edible and medicinal and how you can manage them?
Have you purchased raw land and are in need of guidance on developing it into a homestead or for wildlife management?
Strong Roots Resources offers all of these services as well as fodder tree planning, regenerative livestock management, food forest development, no till gardening techniques, rainwater harvesting and earthwork suggestions.
Every property is unique, and I help evaluate the land with your goals, timeline and abilities in mind.
Services available:
A thorough in person consultation and evaluation of your land that begins with a discussion of your goals and needs. I look at the movement of wind and water, aspect, slope, microclimates, elevation and tree cover. I also evaluate soil condition, the restrictions that are in place and help determine the appropriate uses of the property.
I can determine what types of species will be appropriate for your site and provide lists of specimens as well as some resources for obtaining them. I can also provide a garden planting plan and timeline, including interplanting techniques and guild suggestions.
I also document useful tree, shrub, flower and other species via GPS photo and physical tagging which is inserted into a Google doc and emailed to you. This includes edible wild and medicinal foods, along with suggested uses and harvesting information.
I identify invasive species and offer suggestions for removal / control in order to reestablish a resilient ecosystem.
Consulting Options:
The Urban/Suburban Special: 2 acres or less: $1,750
3 to 6 acres: $2,500

All services listed above include a descriptive follow up emailed document and ongoing email / phone call consulting, and further research as needed. Up to two (2) return visits to the site can be arranged within the first twelve months of being hired. The consulting term is completed 18 months after being hired, so it’s best to work closely and thoroughly together during this term. I accept only a limited amount of consultations during the busy season. This option is best for people who are able to make regular progress on their goals during that time. Also, for the above costs I travel within a 4 hour radius of Knoxville, Tennessee and special arrangements can be made to visit properties further away.
If you’re working toward your goals at a slower pace, these additional services are available:
Property walk and discussion/Q&A is $550 for a 3 hour visit and only available within 2 hours of Knoxville, TN. Additional time spent is $75 an hour. This includes documentation of our discussion and my findings. As well, it’s encouraged that you take all the notes you’d like during our walk.
Pre-purchase evaluation: $650 and available within 2 hours of Knoxville, TN. Emailed notes and a follow up phone call is included.
Are you looking at purchasing property and want a second set of eyes to help evaluate its homestead potential and identify any problems or find its strengths as a homestead property? Choose this option.
In the event you choose a simpler consultation and opt to upgrade to one of the more comprehensive options, your initial payment is added to the balance.

More about me and my background below:
Howdy, my name is Kerry Brown and I’ve made it my mission to teach others how to understand their landscape and to create a productive property of any size, including urban and suburban lots. Over a 13-year period I turned a small urban lot into a productive space that included edible, medicinal and pollinator gardens, small livestock and wildlife habitat with ponds, various composting systems and rainwater catchment. Over time, all of these elements were integrated into a closed loop system. In October 2020, we moved to a larger space and are expanding our production plans on several acres of property. We are taking the lessons learned from urban homesteading and scaling it up for larger regenerative practices to include mobile and rotational systems for livestock, animal fodder systems, wildlife habitat management and invasive removal all while applying processes that regenerate the soil.
I focus on techniques for intensive growing and management and closed loop practices that improve the health of the soil, air and water. I teach you how to see the big picture of the land and help you understand and work with natural systems. I also assist with a priority list of tasks and approaches. Whether you want to develop a homestead property, a getaway location, a small hobby farm or a commercial enterprise, my skills and knowledge can contribute to your success.
